JOB DESCRIPTION
Duties: The Environment team delivers business value to BC Hydro by strategically managing
environmental risk and opportunities in all phases of life for BC Hydro’s assets and ensuring our
regulatory compliance requirements are met, thereby protecting BC Hydro’s consent to operate.

This unique leadership opportunity provides an exciting challenge to lead BC Hydro’s Fish &
Wildlife Compensation Program (FWCP). The Fish & Wildlife Compensation Program is a
partnership between BC Hydro, the Province of B.C., Fisheries and Oceans Canada, First Nations
and public stakeholders to conserve and enhance fish and wildlife in watersheds impacted by
existing BC Hydro dams.
The Manager of the FWCP is responsible for leading a team of professionals and supporting
consultants who implement the strategic, operational and administrative aspects of the FWCP
across three regions. The ideal candidate is a proven leader in the areas of relationship building,
program management, development and implementation of collaborative agreements,
opportunities, and action plans.
This role also includes oversight of the Business & Strategic Services function in the Environment
team, and is accountable for Environment’s coordinated approach to strategic advice and
services.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities include: - Leading and administering overall FWCP operations and related communications strategy;
- Accountability to the Peace, Columbia, and Coastal regional boards as a senior BC Hydro
representative on all strategic, financial, operational, and administrative matters of the FWCP;
- Serving as Co-chair on the Peace and Columbia regional boards;
- Accountability to the Policy Committee which is the most senior forum that has governance
responsibility for the Fish & Wildlife Compensation Program, and is made up of senior
representatives from BC Hydro, DFO, and the Province;
- Accountable for building and maintaining respectful relationships with Indigenous communities,
Provincial and Federal government agencies, organizations and stakeholders and for working
collaboratively to identify synergies and address interests and concerns;
- Accountable for the continual improvement of the program including the oversight of periodic
Evaluation and Audits of the program and the implementation of resulting recommendations;
- Ensures existing controls and standards are used for consistent service delivery and appropriate
governance. Identifies systemic issues and actions for improvement;
- Ensures a department safety plan is created and implemented and foster a safety culture among
staff and contractors;
- As a leader within the Environment Team, may be responsible for aspects of or contributes to
business planning, strategy development, performance metrics and reporting in support of BC
Hydro’s strategic objectives;
- Oversees/manages a number of large, diverse, highly complex and high risk matters and
projects and assumes responsibility for their successful completion. The issues / projects will be
diverse but they will typically involve addressing Environment related matters, and advancing
departmental goals.
- Oversees the development and implementation of various business and strategic plans;
accountable for the development and delivery of Environment's quarterly board reports.
- Mentors and develops staff.
Qualifications: - Bachelor’s degree in a field of Natural Resource Management, Sciences, Engineering, Business
or Public Administration or related degrees. Masters an asset.
- Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in progressively more responsible positions, including
experience in the environmental field.
- Please note an equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
- Demonstrated excellence and a record of successes in building effective relationships and
working with First Nations, environmental regulators, the public and with multi-disciplinary teams.
- Demonstrated proficiency in the following: knowledge and understanding of the importance
building and maintaining relationships with First Nations; First Nations consultation, engagement
and negotiation in British Columbia; cross-cultural awareness and sensitivity; negotiation and
persuasive influence; strategic and tactical planning; project management principles and
practices; analysis and critical thinking; creativity and innovation in problem solving; interpersonal
and communication skills (written and oral); organizational skills.
- Ability to navigate complex conversations and relationships and facilitate discussions to get to
solutions.
- Proven ability to manage teams in a fast-paced work environment with often conflicting demands
and expectations.
- Sound business knowledge including financial/operational/strategic planning and management.
- Knowledge of strategic Environment-related matters, (utility context preferred) which could
include environmental risks, procedures, standards, and may work with Subject Matter Experts to
develop, or oversee the development of plans, standards, procedures, etc.
- Deep understanding of BC Hydro Business and Operations, including our strategic direction
(Five-year strategy), fiscal focus areas, business planning process and understanding of BC
Hydro Environment’s accountabilities in this context.
- Sound knowledge of environmental, social-economic and public interest issues.
- Knowledge of BC Hydro stations and line operations, assets, and associated environmental risks
is an asset.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
- Please note there is travel in this role across the province, sometimes to remote locations and
outside normal working hours.
- Preferred working location is Edmonds, Burnaby. However, alternate locations may be
considered and can be discussed further through the selection process. Any alternate location is
subject to workspace availability.
- This is a Full-time Regular (FTR) M2 M&P opportunity on the team.
- A condition of employment for this role is to maintain your Class 5 drivers license in good
standing.

Flexible work model role definitions
===========================
Our four role types identify the degree of flexibility an employee could have to work from home
based on the type of work they do. The flexibility for an individual job is up to the manager for
each position and the operational requirements. Employees also have the right to work full-time
from the office if they prefer. All of our roles require at least some in-person time.
IBEW/Field – No option to work from home
Resident – Works primarily (4+ days per week) in the office.
Hybrid – May be able to work from home up to 3 days per week.
Remote – Works from home 4+ days per week
